2 Laundry Baskets
Clothes
Water Bottle
Water
Pet Food
Tape
Two Cat Dishes
Canned Goods

Pile multicolored and white clothing on
one side of the room. On the other side of the room arrange two baskets that
are labeled whites and one for colors.
The person is to run back and forth
across the room and bring the clothes to the appropriate bin.
Next fill a bottle of water and then have
the individual feed the animal. Place two cat dishes put out, the bottle filled
with water, and cat food. The individual is to successfully pour water in one
bowl and put food in the other.
Next place glitter all throughout a hard
surface of the house or classroom
Tape a square in the middle of the room
and have the individual sweep the glitter into the square.
Finally place some canned goods on a
table next to the reusable grocery bag and have the individual put the
groceries in the bag and carry the bag across the room.
Purpose: This activity demonstrates the need for
IADL’s. This is demonstrated through the need to maintain a home through chore
exercises and the need to take care of animals through feeding them, Gross
motor skills are exercised through running across a room to sort socks or to
sweep the glitter into the tape square on the floor. These exercises also demonstrate
grasp because you need good grasp in order to hold the items without dropping
from one areas of the room to the other. Problem solving and identification was
used when the individual had to sort the socks and determine which sock goes in
which category of laundry basket. Upper body strength was exercised by carrying
heavy objects such as the groceries and hand eye coordination was needed in
pouring the water and scooping out the cat’s food.
