Calm Down Jar

Calm Down Jar
Calm Down Jar
Setting: classroom, in kitchen, or anywhere at home

Materials:
1 TBSP Glitter glue
1 Cup of hot water
Pan
Regular Glitter (as desired)
Blue Food Coloring (as much as desired)
Mason jar

Instructions:
Heat water to a boil in a pan.
Empty water in Mason jar and add glitter glue, food coloring, and regular glue.
Swirl & Shake around and allow the individual to watch the glitter fall from the top of the jar to the bottom of the jar.

Purpose: This is a great emotional expression along with visual sensory aid when someone is feeling anxious and fear. Having the individual talk about how they feel while watching the glitter float around the jar is a way to expand verbal communication and problem solving in what emotion they are truly feeling. It gives the individual a visual sensory tool to help when they need to calm them and may help individuals that feel anxious in school. This wouldn’t help individuals that have trouble focusing on tasks or objects since they wouldn’t be able to relax or focus just on the glitter. Watching the glitter can help calm the mind enough to identify true emotion. Shaking the jar can also work on grasp and strengthening of upper extremities.
