Sewing Game
Setting: at home
or in the car
Materials:
Styrofoam Plate
Plastic Yarn
Needles
Yarn
Instructions:
Tie lengths of yarn to plastic yarn
needles and knot the end
Have individual to sew the yarn on a
Styrofoam plate by pushing the needle in and out through the plate.
Purpose: The
purpose of this activity is to use dexterity in both hands in order to work the
needle through the plate and thread it in different directions. Dexterity is
demonstrated in grasp of one hand in order to hold the plate and sewing of the
other through the plate. Fine motor skills are needed in order to hold the
needle and press it through the plate. Both hands can be used to string the
thread to strengthen hand muscles of both hands. This activity can help promote
sewing later on as a relaxation tool to regulate emotions and show emotional
expression. Emotional expression can be demonstrated in this type of activity
as well because the person can move the needle and work it in many different
patterns such as zig zag or up and down.
