Ball Balance

Ball Balance
Therapy Fun 4 Kids - A Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) Site: Fidgety kids
Setting: indoor activity such as in a classroom, in an office or at home.

Materials:
Exercise Ball

Instructions:
Take away chairs from desk areas and allow the individual to sit on an exercise ball instead.
Practice writing or homework while sitting on the ball.
An alternative would also be to allow the person to watch television while sitting on the ball to practice free balance.

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to build core muscles and to strengthen them in order to achieve balance. Balance is needed in gross motor activities and ability to hold one self upright. Most ADL’s require balance or to increase independence in transfers. I first saw this idea on the news that actually took out all chairs from her classroom in order to improve balance and be useful to those who need some movement while in seated positions of rolling back and forth (by a small amount, not a lot) in order to complete a task such as homework.
